The Future of the Law on Dogs

You cannot fail to have noticed that there has been a continuing debate in the media on the law on dogs, especially regarding dogs that have acted dangerously. In December 2009 I appeared on the BBC2 'Daily Politics' programme, where I discussed the subject with Lord Kenneth Baker (who is acknowledged as being the politician who introduced the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 to Parliament).

There are different opinions on where we should go from here, but what seems to be unanimously agreed, is that doing nothing is not an option. The solutions proposed are numerous:-

  • some want greater penalties for the owners
  • some want breed specific legislation to be abolished
  • some want new laws introduced to deal with 'status' dogs
  • some would like to see the law returned to how it was in 1991 (and perhaps even made more stringent)
